I always miss her when she goes. Sometimes it takes a day or two... or three. *grins* She always cries, or about... no, she always starts to cry before I can get away. I'm a bastard that way though, so I'm okay with it. But I do try to leave quickly, for her sake. When I get going she doesn't break down completely. Moms, it's just who and what they are.
Up early enough, roughly. I was pushing it, but she was ready. We didn't have time to deal with the cardboard or metal, but I will get that out tomorrow. Today is just a day of rest. No worries about being called, or forgetting something, or this or that. I can't find my phone though. I'll check to see if I put it in the X'ter.
Oh, I still have much to do. I need to finish the bathroom, do some acrobatic/climbing tree trimming, keep everything watered, transplant some of the peppers that are still in the house, keep up on the cats and the cave, and some business things. Ugh. It never seems to end. At least this summer I think some of it will be done, probably most of it. And I will be going on vacation. The tickets for BMan showed up today. I had to go in and sign for them. Fair enough.
No watering again until tomorrow. This time everything will be watered. I may go ahead and do the back and side yard early, if I am up, as they are shaded longer. That way I am not so crimped for time when I water the garden and front lawn later in the eventing. It's a bit of a trick to get it all going, and straight. But this year is looking mighty darned good. Just getting those seedlings to sprout, then keeping them alive, was... a bit of a novel ability. Everything else is nearly miraculous. I would like to get a swim in, Church twice, then walking/biking a few times a week and a swim in the middle of that if I can get that far. I don't have full days, I have moments where I can. It's just a matter of keeping it all going without overdoing. Of course, there is always the fear of falling down, forgetting something vital, or such. *shrug* I'll do what I can and what will happen will happen. C'est la vie, innit?

Some modestly priced, battery-operated irrigation timers can go miles to ensuring the health of your garden. I set and forget, since everything needs daily water down here.
ReplyDeleteIt does mean buying more hoses and sprinklers to set and forget, but the other upside is no dragging irrigation gear around to cover different areas. I use oscillating sprinklers (back and forth fan of spray) because they provide the most even coverage. I can be assured the edges are receiving about the same as the middle.
Re: shade, I've been thinking hard on finding a way to hang shade cloth on the sunny side of the RV at BMan. Even with the 120 volt roof AC running, the interior threatens to become a solar oven. Without it running, it quickly does in the afternoon with full sun hitting her backside.
Hmm, I'll check for timers. I had one, actually. Oh, but my problem with those is that we are on water restrictions. Every other day only, and between 6:00 and 21:00. Then again, some timers might have days on them...
ReplyDeleteYeah, anything that can help. I think you fear the heat like I do, but we both live in the desert enough to know. I fear for those who don't even think about it seriously. I am not absolutely sure how that all will work out. If it gets too hot, or even if it doesn't, theme camps might help, just have to take a stroll to someplace cool... the carcass wash (15:00-16:30 this year (there is a link to this year's schedule)), the hiney hygiene station, perhaps others?
Yes, every other day is no problem for most timers. If it is restricted to specific days of the week, that may require a more sophisticated timer. The cheapest ones are not worth the savings, as they die quickly. Vigoro is a brand that I have been happy with, and run about $40+.

It is clear that non-Burgins take it seriously with the elaborate shade structures you see in the background of many photos. We're unique in knowing full well what the conditions will be like before ever being there.
The carcass wash promises to be quite a trip. Even with sponge bath/shower on Ginger, I might have to gin up the noive to go through it once just for the experience.

ReplyDeleteGiven that you may have difficulty with a bicycle and therefore needing the best stuff to be within reasonable reach on foot, I thought it possible to leave your place Sunday late afternoon with sufficient time to arrive at the gates at midnight. This will give us best chances at choice, non-reserved areas in the lower alphabet streets.
The survival guide has a map that shows a pocket of open homestead land around 5:00-5:30 and between C and E streets (also repeated at 6:30-7:00). This is adjacent to center camp and surrounded by theme camps on all sides.
Might be worth a groggy Monday to stake a claim? I can't sleep worth a damn without pharmaceutical assistance anyway, so I might be good for the overnight drive. Worst case if not is we hit a freeway rest stop for a couple hours of ZZ's and hit the gates at dawn.
Another thought on schedule, I am not pressed for time coming back. I hear tell "the best parties are Monday night". Depending, and we can play it by ear, might be nice to beat the crowds at Exodus and leave Tuesday morning?

ReplyDeleteHow do 3-wheel cycles work for you? Any different than the two-wheel version? A nice benefit is usually ample cargo room for water, gifts, etc.

ReplyDeleteExcellent on the timers. Every other day is all that is needed, no weekday vs. weekend schedule... pure odd even. I'm on it... Vigoro you say? I'll go with that right off the bat, saves me research. I trust you. (When I do research anyway? It's because I have time either getting better or waiting for money, not a trust thing. Although... I... have been known to be contrary... once or twice... for no good reason.)
As for the carcass wash? I simply have no shame, in the right company. I don't have a beautiful body, now that I've been ill so long, but... I don't really care. If "Secret*" pops up, so be it. If he stays shrunken, all good, won't be using him anyway. *Secret - strong enough for a man, made for a woman. *grins*
Yep. We live it, if we generally use tech to avoid it, honestly. But we can't avoid it all. Ugh! And I plan to dip in and push for the run up. Not just for BMan, but the event gives me... a deadline. Something concrete in time and scale. I'm definitely going for the butt... what... butticure? Never had that before, gotta do that at least once. No plugs, it's an outy only, but other than that I don't care if they use it for a canvas... minus painting a target... I'm thinking camo!
As to the drive? I have no problems driving hundreds of miles, even a thousand or more, a "day". I do get weary, but I am immaculate in the saddle. Two of us would make for an easy run. I don't think I would be sleeping anyway. Have no fear about that.
Hmm... a tricycle eh? I have never tried one. My guess is that would be easier. Still, I am going to be busting my hump walk/riding, so we will see. I sort of fear another expense at this point. But if I have trouble I will consider that next year. The thing about a bike is that it is faster. As for walking, I think I will do pretty good, even as I am right now. My last lady friend was a hiker and I buried her on 10 mile hikes. Offered her a piggy back for the last quarter, actually. I think I'm in better shape now, though that is difficult to quantify, since I chose when to hike then, this will be a full-time requirement (being that mobile). I'll look over three-wheelers though, out of curiosity. Carrying capacity would be nice, all by itself, both for BMan and for prep, though, too. Looking...

ReplyDeletehere is a link to one of the kind I have had decent luck with. The battery case is a bear to get open, but the batteries (9v) seem to last a decent length of time. *MUST* bring inside before the first frost though (or insulate very well for later season watering). I can't tell you how many timers I've ruined by cracking the body with the first hard frost.
Okay. Now, on Amazon they were right there. Similar prices. The one I am looking at is this one. It does both my hoses, which would be great. Set it up for one auto water early in the back, then manually water them in the afternoon.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind manually doing the one part, since I am here and have someone to take over for my week off. And it saves me buying two units, more hose, and more sprinklers. If I had to water two to three times a day, every other day, and had a lot to move... that might be different.
Check on the frost. I haven't lost anything, yet. But... perhaps just out of luck. Last year I forgot my hoses out. Then again... I wasn't in charge of watering at all. But on his side, there was a long time between last mowing and first freeze. All good though, so far.
See the raft of negative reviews on that one? I'd avoid. There is a lot of crap in the low end when it comes to these things, and there is no way to tell except experience or other people's experience.
ReplyDeleteNo, I noticed. It's just I don't do Ebay... Well, and other things that have been poorly rated have done just fine. I thought to look at the newer product reviews, but even those were pretty split. So it wasn't a phase, it's a lack of q.c. coupled with cheap labor and no concern due to most products at that price-point being questionable.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is good brands are bought then dumped in quality to make a quick buck, until the next decent system is bought and gutted. Typical Chinese economics though. Most third-worlders rise quickly when given a chance and beaten with a buyer's stick when they do wrong. But they aren't saddled with a murderously criminally corrupt government to the levels that the Chinese are. Oh well.
My take is that mixed reviews reflect competent and incompetent people dealing with a fair to middlin' product. A near universal pan is a red flag to me.
ReplyDeleteThere is that. But too, bogus pro and con reviews clutter the pages, employees and competitors both do it. And as I suggested, brands are built on quality then sold for a few million or billion, then strip mined.
ReplyDeleteThat's why, on some things, I don't go by the reviews. I've had pretty good luck, so far. Oh, and don't forget the idiots who just go for looks. Women notoriously "just love" something, without giving any tech or mechanical reviews. Gah!
