Conservatives need to stop what they are doing.  When debating something like gun control, they shouldn't lead like an idiot, or back off, or find a scape-goat like the mentally ill.  They need to stand firm, hold the line, and not give an inch.  The problem is too many "conservative" politicians are no more conservative than Bill Clinton.  They are for corporate, instead of social, welfare.  So an issue like gun control, while they are "for it" because more of their "clients" are for it, they have zero grasp of why.  How many congress critters could pass a basic test regarding the constitution or bill of rights?  Some leftists there could, the same way those same leftists might actually understand the bible better, and much the same way demons and evil spirits know Christ.  These idiots could get their ass handed to them, in all save knowing how to break laws legally, by the average home-schooled teenager.  It is no wonder they fumble the ball as if they had been cheerleaders up until this year and were forced to play football by their father, or something.

What about "shall not be infringed" is confusing?  Even the 1968 law removing the right to own guns by felons is an infringement.  In some cases, that is wise.  But it should be in a case-by-case finding, with the state proving necessity, not the other way around, let alone across the board.  So now we have doctors, so-called mental health workers, and family members on board?  It reminds me of the cluster*($* of the Olympics sex check teams.  If you have to check...  Never mind.  As Vox has pointed out, it would be better if every man and woman had a gun, and could carry, than that even certain sections not be allowed to own.  It, to me, looks like Republicans are just dancing to other forms of restrictions themselves.  They are dancing, purely, with Democrats across the aisle, as I am almost absolutely sure they aren't dancing with fired up constituents, not ones who would vote for them anyway.

What a mess.  And, no, this isn't going to fix itself or be fixed by anyone.  Get used to it or get out, if D.C. has a point about "where?".  But being a foreigner might buy you some time to get out of a quickly falling country to a slightly more stable or better re-stabilizing one.

As to whether Hitler actually enforced a gun ban?  Yes, for the Jewish only, if there were many and varied restrictions, registration, and limits on ammunition types beside the ban for Jewish ownership.  Yes, he did.  So, when your government is attempting, hinting at, or pushing, a ban on guns for you, you had best wake up and understand.  They intend you to be as the German government of the 30's and 40's intended the Jewish people to be.  Dead, at their leisure.  While they didn't completely succeed, do you want to bet on survival at those odds, or in that way?  Understand, the only reason a single Jewish soul survived that hell was because dictators are greedy as hell.  Another thing to consider is... it was America who saved Europe.  Who, exactly, would save America?  Yes, it IS your problem.
