I decided to go for an early lunch. Coleslaw is very easy to make, and it gets better with time... urhm... up to a point. I made some of that and sliced the last of the brisket, then heated that. While I just didn't have time to go to the 'real' breadstore, I did pick up a loaf of swirl rye, or so that package said. Just fluff, you can tell when you lift it, and with a minor squeeze, that it's just sugar made to look like bread. Still, I was hoping for some rye flavor. I used the fresh slaw, four slices of bread, and four thin cuts of brisket for a very nice lunch. The rest of the coleslaw is... marinating, covered, in the fridge. While I used to really not like cabbage, I never minded coleslaw. Now I really enjoy it. Ah, forgot to add the dried fruit. I bought one package of dried cherries and one of dried cranberries, so I have something for the future. Cranberries first, I think, into the slaw. If... I can find them.
I went very simply with the slaw. I only had baby carrots, so I sliced some of those, on a bias. Then a head of cabbage of course. A cup of mayo, I would guess, mixed with a half a cup of apple vinegar, a teaspoon of salt, and a tablespoon of black pepper. Adding the dried cranberries will be the final touch. Nothing fancy. And, really, I prefer things more plain. I'm not into marinades or long ingredient lists. I'm not terribly into fancy, exacting, cooking or baking processes save an occasional bit of fun. Whole, simple, straight up, with everything being as fresh as possible. That works for me. Next week, potato salad? Sure seems like the right time of the year. A bowl of these things will last me nearly a week, or close enough. Grilling and this, plus an few meals coming in, and scrounging between will see me to eating better than I have in ages. I need that, too, once in a while.
No mice in the trap I set. They may vacate as soon as the weather outside is warm enough. Having two, always hungry, cats in the premises, and them having access to the basement, means that the only real reason a mouse would be here is if the choice was between freezing to death and playing cat and mouse. I'll... Keep the trap ready for this fall. Urhm, I will have to clean off the peanut butter or that will go rancid. I might leave it down there for another week, checking it every other day, just in case. I was sure hoping for a couple of free treats for the girls. They definitely love such things. I may buy mouse cages, though, in case I get more than I wish to feed the girls at once. Feed them leftovers, or bits of rice or other grain, along with a little water bowl, maybe some stuff to soak up their droppings. I'll think about it more as I get to fall.
Oh, right... I'm about ready to dig into the r.o. install. I have to turn the water off, then drain the lines, then install the new valves. Might as well do them both while I am at it. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. But then, something else always seems to come up, no task is as quick as it might seem, and... *sigh* Yeah, I'll quite moaning and get to it. That's the only way I'll ever get it done.
I called my mother this morning, and she was taking calls. All good. They had a barbeque yesterday, and my mother is becoming... better at leaving her phone out of earshot. Oh, I'll ne'r complain about that. Then it was too late when she realized I had called. No problems here. I'm just glad she enjoyed a good meal and fine company yesterday. Shopping and mowing today, a riding mower... something she really does enjoy. Actually both jobs are to her liking. Mostly, sort of, as jobs go. I just need to check up on her once in a while. More for her emotions, otherwise she thinks no one loves her. :) Crazy woman.
Oh, haven't been editing lately. I just, seriously, don't have that kind of focus. Don't worry, Lucy. You've probably seen worse.
Well... I ought to get busy. Later.
