Have you ever thought about really traveling?  If you have looked at, priced, and considered RV's, you will find many problems.  Start to stop.  There is no lemon law for those.  I haven't bothered pricing them, if I suspect they cost, probably starting, at about $150,000, baseline, give or take.  Yeah, more than my home.  If I wished to make simple home payments I actually could probably "buy" one.  Maybe not, they might require a lot more of a down payment?  The thing is, I wouldn't buy one.  Manufacturers consider such a vehicle to be normal if it is in the shop eleven out of twelve months.  Huh?  Yeah.  Not that they all are, only that if yours is the one, you are just out.  I am not sure about preconfigured camping vans and various sorts of vehicles.  My guess is they are considered the same as RVs, with no real guarantees.  As well, some of the better ones don't cost all that much less, starting in the $100k range and easily going up.  Not to my liking.

There are, possibly, options.  Buying a commercial van, for example.  Perhaps arranging for it to be upkitted to 4x4 drive, then doing a bunch of work on your own.  Adding a water tank, perhaps a pump, a solar system, a bed, shelving, insulation, better flooring, connecting and entertainment center in, and much else.  You could do it for less, over time, and know exactly what is in there and how it is connected.  You could design the systems to work to your specs, to be added, removed, shifted, and such to your tastes and need.  And all for a good deal less than buying even a prebuilt camper van, but with a warranty of a regular vehicle.

Oh, they don't just hand these out.  And costs will add up.  However, after a year or two or even five, of traveling, even part time, some of the van could be deconstructed, and the base system could easily be sold back into the market, having saved a great deal on lodging.  The ten miles per gallon would hit you.  Though if you simply traveled, say, a tank of gas a week, or even every other week, you would be good.  Yeah, watch your p's and q's and you could really have some fun out there.  Not something for everyone, just a thought.

Just thinking.  Not a real plan, though not, possibly, an impossibility.  I don't see it as a means of avoiding the troubles that are on the way.  More a way of seeing what was before it isn't.  Some wealthy believe they can escape what they made.  Others believe they can run away, joining with others they have never met, hoping to live it out.  The truth is, the strongest asset you can have, if the hammer falls, is community, and one based on survival before it all goes bad, who have stored and saved, and whom you already know.  If there are no ties, when it hits, you will simply be one outsider among many.

So, even if this became a reality, it would merely be to, perhaps, extend connections, create distant ones, but then to come home, off the road, and strengthen the local natural bonds.  It won't help you escape, it would just be one more target with a LOT of potential engine juice, food, water, and whatever else bandits might want.  Remember, these things are not even close to bullet-proof.  At ten mpg (assuming 4x4 upgraded), you won't be going all that far, and with the weight and systems, you won't be getting away all that fast.

Still... it would be good to see the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, the Declaration of Independence, Boston, yes even NYC (before it becomes all ash), D.C., the Eastern and Western seaboards, Florida, the interior north, south, middle, east, and west.  The time to do such, at least reasonably safely, may well be shortening and tightening even now.  Just how happy are unemployed immigrants with no love for this nation or it's people.  Not just in the millions, but in the tens of millions, they are an invasion force our government is inciting to our end, even.  There is some time.  Well, and this vehicle would be a heck of a mule in hard times, if enough car juice could be kept in supply.  Excellent for converting to a work wagon, and even hauling loads of wood out of the mountains, water to town, etc.  Not useless even in hard times.
