All one need do is compare this to that, that to those, here with there. In short order, choices make themselves. Now, salt pork doesn't sound all that bad. Unless it really was prepared for a war four years past. Or, if that is the only meat, or even the best of meat, that one would get for a long time. Add in not having access to good cooking utensils and you have another form of sacrifice. Just compared, this to that, MREs are quite fine. I never minded them, personally. But then, at the time, food was just a tool, not so much a pleasure. Even so, MREs aren't all that bad. Playing with it, mixing this and that, and some guys really could put out a decent spread. Everyone tried, some weren't all that good. I just wan't that interested. As picky as I seem, at times I really didn't care in some ways. At that time, when I had the option, I pushed for higher protein, then fat, and carbs as a lesser food. When I didn't have a choice, food was just food. Calories in for calories out, flavor, portions of this and that, freshness, all optional variable and such.
I have considered making salt pork, and seeing, truly, how long it will last. My guess is it is probably functionally edible long after it is practically edible. I mean, it is still good long after people are no longer able to eat it... because of taste, texture, or such. As for the excessive salt? Well, soaking helps, then cutting a small portion in a large portion of beans and other such may also help. A pound, diced, added to three or four pounds of beans, and there you go. Smoking the meat, first, might help it last longer, edibly, as well. But that is a lot of work to add to the process. If time and energy is available, though, it would be well worth the effort. Oh, and though salted pork is mostly what is in common parlance these days, salted beef, even fish, and other meats, are quite viable options. Add in the smoke curing process, and you really can put meat up for a bit.
As to ash cakes? I really would like to experiment with that. I may run my rocket stove through it's paces some cool day, then used the ash pile to tinker in this regard. I don't expect much. But on a cool day, while out tinkering with that, perhaps setting up the hammock and other camp gear, it might just make a neat little historic bit, bite, or treat. A touch of cinnamon or allspice, a little portion of sugar, or just straight up, perhaps with jam or jelly that might be packable... just... curious. It would certainly go well in the makings from dehydrated stew ingredients. And hunger is always a find spice.
Yeah, just thinking on things. I noticed the video, remembered a few others, so thought to put something together.
As to my doc, it looks like that is a negative. His system doesn't accept that card. Though, that I got the card and no appointment means that nobody is taking that card. I am told that it isn't even up to the doctors. They are all corporate these days, and corporate either accepts it or not. Which means I can't even trick the system into accepting and paying on my own. The doctor has to accept the card or I can't get medicine. Yeah... Trouble. I'll make a few calls in this next week, see if a doctor is available. Not looking good. Alaska may be the required plan through no choice.
