Yes, mind and body have started taking a downturn. Just a touch, but several steps down into the dark have been taken. There is always a chance that the descent will be shallow. A bit of music to frame the events, and season.
This was simply a redoing of an archaic song I have enjoyed since my first introduction. Some group that played traditional music introduced the music when I was quite young. True a nearly true traveling minstrel troupe. I can almost still hear the old instruments and see the outfits. This version will do quite nicely.
As a child I remember being followed by ravens. I know I asked my mother about them. I feared them, initially. I wondered if they wanted something from me, or wanted to do me harm. I heard they liked bright shiny objects so I even made sure my buttons and such were muted. It didn't matter. No sympathy, I was still required to go to school, black birds or no. They never harmed me, just followed me from home to school, flying from telephone perch to perch. After a bit I became used to them and just ignored them. Ruthven was the first town I remember them following me. I was in the third grade. After that, though, I no longer feared them in stories and such.
When I hit upon Poe, much later, I was enchanted by the use of ravens and such. From my experience the creatures and devices he used for fright weren't frightening, allowing me to dig deeper into Poe's work, on to realizing the terrible things in the world aren't the beasts, darkness, dead things, old houses, or any external thing. Perhaps I didn't, early on, realize what the terrible things were, fully. I simply knew that it wasn't what was proposed. I did wonder if people were superstitious.
