Traffic was absolute murder. Wall to wall, ten to fifteen max in town, probably forty on the highways, at least the busy part, and mostly. On the more open part people were driving slow, I think just to piss everyone off who might not have been yet. Driving ten miles under, until you go to pass, then speeding up to five over and racing you as you pass them. Merry Christmas? Really?
Never mind. I did make it in, did the exchange at the dry cleaner, letting them know it would be after the 1st... asking if that was okay. Sure enough. Next it was lunch time. I really needed food. A burger meal and a diet soda. Not my favorite way to fly, but it was just food. Calories. Not so much wanted as needed. Then to the other big-box hardware. I wasn't sure if I was wearing out the nerves at the other one. The problem was, the other one didn't have galvanized up to what I needed. Ugh. So... another run to the regular big-box.
All while traveling as if in a wagon train, when someone wasn't cutting me off or doing other dangerous or silly stuff. Praying when people came up behind me that they would, indeed, stop in time. It's ugly out there. People seem to be brutal, and mean it... or just the opposite and completely unaware of... anything? It's a spooky world when it gets like that. People, one on one, can be dealt with. But when they are in a herd, part aggressive, part unaware, tightly packed, and busy... one little spark and they can kill you and never even face up to what they did. Run you over, harm you otherwise just getting "away" even if they don't know from what... dangerous. You can't negotiate with a mob. Even, or worse(?), an unorganized one.
I made it out of town and was almost about to settle into a form of bliss to be leaving the pack, sort of. Then my mind started doing some geometry, physics, calc, and whatever else and... a shiver. The pieces weren't right. I had... in my hurry and the hustle and bustle push and shove and tight quarters lost track of some details. Just go home, I thought. But I didn't want to leave it like that. My heart hurt at the thought of leaving it as is, but it hurt at the thought going back. After a few seconds of comparing the pains, going back felt so much better even if it was going to be murder. It was, but I did.
Do I have all the right pieces? I can only say that I think I can make do. I was buying for both the washing machine drain and the kitchen sink drain, and the... various sizings, all 1 1/2 inch, were all different. Now, the black drain pvc (or whatever) is actually the same size as the galvanized steel, if the threads are probably off. But the under the sink 1 1/2 inch (by the labels, as with the others) is more like a little less than an 1 inch to 1 1/4? I... bought enough pieces and parts to build up and down to the parts I had... I think. Ugh. The checking, juggling, getting things cut, figuring fit, and doing that for multiple sizes and a coupler was... exhausting. As I said, I THINK I have everything. Assuming... much. Even with fitting to compare, it... just doesn't always make sense.
I am thinking hardware stores are set up, in some of these things, to discourage diy. They want you to pay someone else to do it. Government approves this, because they want everything standard. It's... they mean to cause problems and not be so helpful. For me, it isn't even about the money. It's about not being so beholden to those with only their self interest at hand. I would probably, on top of it, pay $150 to $300 for someone to put in less than $30 in parts, and possibly not even put them in correctly at that. They really do price themselves out, and take advantage of certain ones more than others. I guess they get used to that, working for companies and unions who don't care?
I had a bit of heart when I returned home, a glass of milk too. I'll let that digest and get to what I can yet tonight. I did install the nib, and the pipe length, in the wash room for the drain before I went to town, and finished half of the dishes fully dried and put up this morning, so I'm doing okay. I certainly hope the coupling, elbows, p-trap, and such just fly together. I did use tape on the galvanized, and have glue for pvc (etc) that is good for high pressure, and high to low temps. I was afraid the normal stuff wouldn't do, being that I run a pretty hot water temp. Damn it, I mean things!
If it goes together, I might be able to have it fully fitted, kitted, glued, and placed in short order. It's not hard work. And with the glue, it doesn't even require tightening. I may check some things regarding the kitchen drain yet tonight, but I don't think I'll try to put that together today. I want to be fresh for that. I was thinking appliances first, but not so much. I need that to drain. Not that I wash in there yet, but I do get my reverse osmosis water through that, and the overflow has to go somewhere. Daily tea and water, up to three gallons, means a pretty decent dump. I am drinking less these days, but still, even at a gallon or and an half, that's a lot of dumping. Plus, that is my cooking water. And, yes, it does make a huge difference.
I'm not sure how long it takes the glued to cure. That is the last thing I need to check. First a rest, and some digestion time. Good evening and later.
