Beside working on the boat, tomorrow is cooking day. Boiled eggs don't last much more than a week, neither do cooked grains. I might be pushing it at that, but... it's close enough. I don't know if I will get to some other cooking/food prep things tomorrow, but they are on my shorter list.
I have discussed pickling eggs before. It's simple enough, I just never quite had everything together all at once. Now, I have half gallon jugs, which... if the video is correct, will take about two dozen eggs each. I don't, currently, have enough eggs, but I do have everything else, and probably enough eggs to do one or two jars, leaving the last for later. A good thing for some week I don't have the time to boil and peel eighteen eggs, or at least it might buy me a few days until I can. Plus as a treat. I used to love these, not sure I still do. As I am finding though, food doesn't have to be loved, just eaten.
The other food item is something I just stumbled across. I've been thinking about pemmican for a long time. The problem with it, is that it requires some things I just didn't have and couldn't find easily, felt were too expensive, along with some other problems. I finally found affordable, and good as it turns out, tallow. That is the fat I prefer. Lard is okay, and I don't mind cooking some things with it, but it can have a piggy taste. Which is fine, just not for everything, and not for pemmican... not to my mind. As for dehydrated berries, cherries, other fruits, or such, those are easy enough to find. Expensive, but available. I am looking at a non-electric dehydrator currently. But that is a bit off, and will take some practice. Could make one, but I don't think it would save much compared to the kit I am looking at. So, the real problem is jerky. This guy has a solution that just might make jerky affordable. A bit of practice, to make it dry enough to nearly powder, and... yeah. This could work.
Some of the jerky would be just fine to take along all by itself. I have the feeling that pemmican isn't all that tasty. As with other food, as I just discussed and have been discussing, it isn't all about taste. As it turns out, it's becoming little about taste. Eating the right stuff trumps that, if you can eat it. I'm working on that. A couple of pounds of pemmican, though, an ounce or two a day straight or in a stew, would handle fat needs for a while. The stuff lasts well enough, the real problem is carrying enough of a load of it. Still, it's a start. A partial solution to one of the problems with going wild.
Oh, if you want to go fancy, and be a bit more entertained about the notion? Well, he cracks me up, anyway. Perhaps, at some point, when I don't have as much else going on I might try some of what he his going on about. Looks good too, but a lot more involved.
"You're right, veiled threat would be more appropriate." Gah! You know it.
